US Sunlight Corporation manufactured solar powered ventilation products for residential homes primarily for attic and crawlspace applications. Their flagship product, The Solar Powered Attic Fan was sold nationwide through Costco Stores and through various online retailers as well.

My involvement with US Sunlight happened early on in their foundational phase. As a designer with Metrotech Advertising, I designed the corporate identity for US Sunlight as well as the design style of their product packaging and presentation in Costco stores and online.

Later on, I would become the Creative Director for US Sunlight, overseeing all aspects of their visual identity. Working closely with the owners and senior executive staff, I created and developed all the marketing materials, retail boxes, product photographs and video productions for the company’s forward facing presence.

Corporate Identity/Logo Design

US Sunlight’s brand started with the main company logo and stationery design. The logo needed to scale properly and be very reproduction friendly for different applications. This required decisions early in the process about the color palette, Icon to Title ratio and tagline readability at different sizes.

Product Logos

Along with the Main Corporate Logo, I designed a series of logos for each product including: Solar Powered Attic Fan, All Purpose Ventilator, Solar Controller and SkylightTube. Simple yet effective, these product logos were designed to have flexible applications while remaining sticky to the observer. The logos were used primarily on packaging and sales materials as well as in the company website.

Retail Box Design and Layout

The owners of US Sunlight wanted the retail boxes to act as a product brochure as well, so each visible surface was utilized for this purpose. Because of the impulse driven nature of the Costco customer, the box had to advertise the product completely.

The retail packaging for US Sunlight included:

  • In-house photography/stock imagery

  • Photoshop compositing of various design elements

  • Color scheme and design of subject icons

  • Box dieline and layout for printing

Product Training Videos

US Sunlight required numerous video productions for web and DVD distribution. From Sales Training to Installation Instructions, the videos were designed to enhance product appeal as well as educate and inform the viewer.

The 2014ST Training Video for the SkylightTube was developed to train Costco in-store product demonstrators on product features and benefits to share as they engaged with the customers.

How to Videos for the End-User

For product FAQs/troubleshooting and installation instructions, the use of video was a highly desired medium for US Sunlight. FAQs for The Solar Controller for use with The Solar Powered Attic Fan and the All Purpose Ventilator was best demonstrated in a video format.

Video Production for US Sunlight included:

  • Video Capture both in studio and on location

  • Storyboard, Script Writing and directing the talent

  • Voice-over recording

  • Post editing in Adobe Premiere Pro

Extended Product and Sales Videos

US Sunlight wanted to create immersive and informative Sales videos to highlight features and benefits of their Solar Ventilation products. For this I held auditions at the corporate headquarters for the spokesperson and was director and producer for these campaigns.

These videos were used on YouTube and the US Sunlight Corporate website as well as various companion sites for vendors and installers nationwide.
